Peace Poles

OUR PROJECTS

Peace Day celebration in the garden!

On September 21, 2017, we celebrated Peace Day in the garden by presenting our community partners, our principal, and one for me from my husband.   Silver Phoenix Design Company helped my husband and me to design and fabricate the peace poles and they are a beautiful work of art that reminds us daily to have a grateful heart.

Gratitude is an aspect of peace…when your heart is grateful you are at peace.

Our principal at the time, Mr. James Fowler enjoyed sending out inspirational quotes daily in emails to his staff.  His peace pole included some of his favorite quotes and gave tribute to his service as a veteran.

QUOTE ON POLE: “Theories and goals of education don’t matter a whit if you do not consider your students to be human beings”. Lou Ann Walker….

A closed mind is like a closed book; just a block of wood. Chinese Proverb.

Our next pole honored our community partners.   We had so many people who had helped in the development of our garden, and we wanted a place where they would be permanently acknowledged

Tom and Sarni Bensman and PEACEDAYton were thanked for donating materials and building raised beds, hauling mulch and whatever else we needed, and providing hours and hours of volunteer time.

The ladies from the Garden Club of Dayton were thanked for their constant support, hard work, and dedication to our native prairie area and the entire garden.  They have been with us since the conception of the garden, attending every meeting, helping out with fundraisers, and providing constant support and council.

Our district and community partners included:

North Dayton Garden Center, Kiser Alumni,  Five Rivers Metro Parks, IN/KY/OH Carpenters Union, Home Depot, Kirk Vencil our grounds foreman and his crew, the Dayton Public Schools maintenance crew,  the construction students from Ponitz,  the Kiser cafeteria and custodial staff,  Montgomery County Recycling Center and the Da’vinci Neighborhood Association.  We also thanked all the students at staff at Kiser, which included preschool through 8th grade at that time-and of especially their teachers.

The quote on the community peace pole was “In every gardener, there is a child who believes in the seed fairy”…

The last peace pole was donated by my husband “in honor of his wife’s hard work and dedication”.  This pole included some of my favorite quotes which are:

“The garden is a place you can go to find yourself”.

“Just when the caterpillar thought it was the end of the world…it became a butterfly”.

and last but definitely not least…”When a flower doesn’t grow, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower”…Alexander den Heijer
